Website Subscription vs. Traditional Web Design: Which Is Better?

"Traditional" web design and website subscriptions aren't really two versions of the same product — they're two different answers to "who's responsible for this website after it launches?" Understanding that difference matters more than comparing sticker prices.
How traditional web design works
You hire a freelancer or agency, pay a project fee (often in installments), and receive a finished website. Once it launches, the relationship is largely over. The files are yours, but so is everything that comes next: renewing hosting, applying security updates, and paying again — often at an hourly rate — every time you need a change.
- One upfront project cost, typically $3,000–$15,000+ for a custom small business site
- You own the finished files from day one
- Hosting, domain, and maintenance are usually your responsibility afterward
- Future changes are quoted and billed individually
How a website subscription works
A subscription flips the structure: a small one-time setup fee ($99 with Geeks5G Studios) gets your project started, and a monthly plan covers hosting, security, maintenance, and a set number of small changes every month — for as long as you're subscribed.
- Low upfront cost — $99 to start, instead of thousands
- Hosting, SSL, security, and backups included every month
- 1+ small content or design change included monthly, no separate invoice
- Cancel anytime — no long-term contract
Side by side
| Category | Traditional (one-time) | Website Subscription |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | $3,000–$15,000+ | $99 |
| Monthly cost | $0, but hosting/updates billed separately | $149+/mo, all-inclusive |
| Who maintains it | You, or pay again for help | Included |
| Small changes | Billed per request | Included monthly |
| Website ownership | Yours from day one | Transfers to you after 24 months of active subscription, or sooner via buyout |
| Best for | Businesses that rarely change their site | Businesses that want a site that evolves with them |
On ownership
With our subscription, you retain ownership of anything you provide us (copy, photos, branding) from day one. The website itself transfers to you after 24 consecutive months of an active, fully paid subscription, or earlier through a separate buyout — full details are in our Terms of Service.
Which one actually fits your business?
Traditional web design can make sense if your site genuinely won't change much — a simple digital business card you expect to touch once every few years, and you have the budget to pay it off in one go.
A subscription tends to make more sense if you're a growing or active business: you'll want to update hours, add a promotion, swap out photos, or add a new service page more than once a year, and you'd rather that be included than billed one request at a time. It also removes the upfront barrier — most businesses can absorb a $99 start far more easily than a five-figure invoice.
